She was described as "The future of the modeling world", by retired supermodel Tyra Banks. Her last name is spelled Ambrósio, but the accent is omitted in her modeling work.

She is a prominent model for Guess?, Victoria's Secret and the UK company Next.

Alessandra is one of several Brazilian models who became known in the late 1990s along with Gisele Bündchen, Adriana Lima and Ana Beatriz Barros.

Her modeling career started when she decided to take modeling lessons in Brazil. The course led to her participation in Elite's Look of the Year contest in 1996, which eventually led to her contract with Elite Model Management.
